Bouquet of the Week
March 29, 2017
Falling Springs Flowers will be at the Bardstown Road Farmers Market this Saturday for the Opening Day of the spring market season!
We begin the season with big bunches of fresh cut tulips. We plant tulips in fall and winter. But instead of putting them in the ground, we plant them in crates full of potting mix and chill them in the cooler over the winter. They're planted in succession to spread out the harvest as much as possible.
We move the crates out into the hoophouse in the spring to grow and flower. This is a common method for growing all kinds of bulbs for cut flowers. It's an interesting perversion of nature for commercial purposes, if you're into that kind of thing.
Tulip production from cooler to harvest in crates.
The tulip harvest signals the start of the 2017 cut flower season. We're excited to see you again this Saturday at the Bardstown Road Farmers Market!
